The fall speeds of sub-100μm ice crystals
نویسنده
چکیده
Estimates for the sedimentation rate of realistic ice crystals at sizes smaller than 100 μm are presented. These calculations, which exploit new results for the capacitance of ice crystals, are compared with laboratory studies and found to be in good agreement. The results highlight a weakness in contemporary ice particle fall speed parameterisations for very small crystals, which can lead to sedimentation rates being overestimated by a factor of two. The theoretical approach applied here may also be useful for calculating the sedimentation rate and mobility of non-spherical aerosol particles. Copyright c © 2007 Royal Meteorological Society

Improved estimates for the fall speed of sub-100μm ice crystals
New theoretical results are presented for the sedimentation rate of realistic ice crystals at sizes smaller than 100 μm. The calculations, which exploit a mathematical analogy with electrostatics, are compared with laboratory studies and found to be in good agreement. These results highlight a weakness in contemporary ice particle fall speed parameterisations for very small crystals, which can ...
متن کاملDoppler lidar measurements of oriented planar ice crystals falling from supercooled and glaciated layer clouds
The properties of planar ice crystals settling horizontally have been investigated using a vertically-pointing Doppler lidar. Strong specular reflections were observed from their oriented basal facets, identified by comparison with a second lidar pointing 4◦ from zenith. Analysis of 17 months of continuous high-resolution observations reveal that these pristine crystals are frequently observed ...
متن کاملAdvances in the Estimation of Ice Particle Fall Speeds Using Laboratory and Field Measurements
Accurate estimates for the fall speed of natural hydrometeors are vital if their evolution in clouds is to be understood quantitatively. In this study, laboratory measurements of the terminal velocity yt for a variety of ice particle models settling in viscous fluids, along with wind-tunnel and field measurements of ice particles settling in air, have been analyzed and compared to common method...
متن کاملRemote sensing of crystal shapes in ice clouds
Ice crystals in clouds exist in a virtually limitless variation of geometries. The most basic shapes of ice crystals are columnar or plate-like hexagonal prisms with aspect ratios determined by relative humidity and temperature. However, crystals in ice clouds generally display more complex structures owing to aggregation, riming and growth histories through varying temperature and humidity reg...
متن کاملFormation of large (≃100 μm) ice crystals near the tropical tropopause
Recent high-altitude aircraft measurements with in situ imaging instruments indicated the presence of relatively large (≃100μm length), thin (aspect ratios of ≃6:1 or larger) hexagonal plate ice crystals near the tropical tropopause in very low concentrations (<0.01 L−1). These crystals were not produced by deep convection or aggregation. We use simple growth-sedimentation calculations as well ...
